Poetry Friday/ Writer's Diary #35

I've been really enjoying Poetry Fridays, especially when people contribute their original work. I've added a few things of my own but lately I've been trying to find something a little more kid friendly. It's not that I write a lot of sordid poetry, but I've noticed that a lot of the other Poetry Friday participants seem to be more focused on children's lit. Having been a primary teacher and a parent of two, I've developed an appreciation of that literature as well and so I'd like my blog entries to reflect that love. I've written about kids' books from time to time, but I've never added my own poem aimed at young people. So here's my first attempt...

Hi John,
I love this poem. I have been trying for weeks to figure out how to do concrete poetry as a form for the weekly stretch. All of mine are done by hand, and while I have access to a scanner, I don't know that others do. Perhaps I can inspire folks with your poem.
Best,
Tricia

LOVE it. How did you get your concrete poem to hold together when you posted? Make it an image? I need to know!

This is so fun! I thought the d and s had drifted at first, due to funky blog formatting, and then--slap my forehead--got to the end. Terrific!

Did you create this as an image and then insert it into your blog?

John,

Love your poem. I'm with the others. How did you make the image of your poem?

That is phenomenal, and really, truly genius.

I second Tricia's, Sara's and Elaine's question on how you achieved it.

CLEVER and cute. How awesome is it that you wrote it, even?! Thanks for sharing that.

Wow, I'm going to have a swelled head. Thank you all for the kind words.

To answer those who wondered how I did it from a technical standpoint, Laura and Sara are on the right track. First, I wrote it in Microsoft Word (though I had to tweak the spacing between letters somewhat) and then I copied the whole thing into Paint, where I saved it as a bitmap image, which in turn was uploaded into blogger. I've been frustrated enough with blogger to even attempt coding it in.

Hope that helps!

John Mutford, that is sweet. Great going. I have no questions on how you did the formatting, especially since you already answered.
